Chicken with Yellow Lentils

Ingredients:
500g chicken, cut into bite size pieces
1 cup curd (yogurt)
250g Chana dal (Bengal gram or split yellow peas)
5 medium onions
1 inch fresh ginger
2 dry red chilies
1 bay leaf
½ tsp garam masala powder
1 ½ tsp salt
½ cup water
Directions:
Peel and grind three of the onions, ginger along with the dry red chilies into a paste.
Mix the paste with the curd.
Mix the paste with the chicken pieces and combine well.
Cut the remaining 2 onions into thin slices.
Heat the oil in a pan. Put the sliced onions in the pan and fry until softened. Add the bay leaf and fry for 1 minute.
Add the coated chicken pieces to the pan. Pour in the water and stir for 1 minute.
Cover and cook on low heat for 20 minutes.
While chicken cooks, boil the lentils in a pressure cooker with garam masala, salt and enough water. Drain the lentils and set aside.
Add the cooked lentils to the chicken. Stir and cook for 4 minutes.
Remove from heat. Serve garnished with fried onions if desired.
